Project Description

The Biogen Idec Building 26 Project is a 5-story, 190,000 square foot, LEED-Gold Certified building that initially housed 500 employees. Onsite, Biogen Idec manufactures commercial products AVONEX® (interferon beta-1a) and TYSABRI® (natalizumab), both indicated for multiple sclerosis (MS), plus a growing number of other clinical products. The Patient Services group, which serves MS patients and their caregivers, has its inbound/outbound call center in Building 26. The group handles approximately 950,000 calls annually and processed more than $300 million in financial assistance for patients last year.

J&A Engineering staff designed the security, communication, and access control systems for the new administration building. Building Systems included intrusion detection, access control, CCTV surveillance, visitor management, executive security, personnel duress, optical turnstiles, and emergency intercom. Gate controls and parking control systems were also developed for the property. The project created a new central command center that included video walls and communication systems to support corporate security operations. A secondary system requirement was the design of an IP-Based mass notification system that included large format horn systems throughout the property and integration with the facilities Cisco Call-Manager VOIP system.
